Dental implants are replacement roots made out of titanium, just like an artificial knee or hip. Dental implants have many advantages including:

  • Improved speech and comfort
  • Increased confidence
  • Better oral health
  • Durable and long lasting
  • Better chewing and digestion of food

Success rates of dental implants are as high as 98%. Most people are good candidates for the procedure as long as they are healthy enough for routine oral surgery. The level of pain and recovery that comes with a dental implant is often less than a tooth extraction.

FAQs

What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are replacement roots that are surgically placed into the jawbone. They fuse with the bone and provide a strong foundation for a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants are commercially pure titanium posts that are surgically placed in the bone. The implant can be placed in the bone socket of the missing tooth or wherever there is available bone. Replacement teeth can be removable dentures that are supported by the implants with “snaps” called Locators(copywriter symbol). Individual teeth or bridges can be cemented, or screwed directly to the dental implant. Many options are available to restore your teeth to their natural shape and color with dental implants.

Types of implants
There are a several different types of implant procedures. The type of Dental Implant that is best for you depends on the current state of your teeth and the desire that you would like to achieve.

IF: One tooth is missing,
THEN: The empty space is restored with a single dental implant, an abutment (connector), and a crown. The crown is either cemented or screwed to the abutment which is screwed to the implant.

IF: Several teeth are missing,
THEN: The empty space is restored with 2 or more implants, abutments, and a fixed (permanent) bridge. As with a crown, the bridge is either cemented or screwed directly to the abutments.

IF: All of the teeth are missing,
THEN: The empty space is restored with many implants and a fixed (permanent) bridge, or a denture that “snaps” onto two or more Locator abutments which are connected to the implants. Another option is the All-on-4 appliance. This is a non-removable appliance that is usually indicated for people who are going to lose all of their teeth and don’t want anything that is removable.

Implant procedure
At your initial appointment, Dr. Mann will create your individualized treatment plan. This plan is specific to you and based on your overall medical and dental health as well as your individual desires. Once the plan is created, you’ll be scheduled for the implant surgery. During your surgery, the titanium implants will be placed into your jawbone. Very often, a bone graft procedure is performed when your implants are placed. As your jawbone heals, the bone integrates, or fuses to the titanium implant. This process can take anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks. During this time it’s extremely important that you follow the directions that are given to you after your surgery.

Once your jawbone has healed, an abutment is attached to the implant. This abutment is what will hold the new crown or bridge. The abutment can also be a “snap” type called a Locator. This process can take between 2 and 4 weeks and may involve impressions of the abutments.

Our Technology
At our office in Manchester, we have a Sirona ORTHOPOS XG 3D Scanner. The scanner allows us to evaluate the quality and quantity of bone for planning the precise and safe location to place the dental implants. Hidden abnormalities like cysts, cancers, septum deviations, and sinus infections are often discovered that have never been diagnosed. The 3D scanner improves the predictability and safety of placing dental implants and utilizing 3D technology is now considered the standard of care in implant dentistry.

3dscanner

The scanner is the same size as a 2D x-ray machine, and we have it in a room adjacent to our patient rooms. The scanning process is very simple and painless. The patient can sit or stand during the scan and it only takes about 14 seconds.

Our Cerec CAD/CAM machine that is commonly used for fabricating crowns in a single visit integrates beautifully with the 3D Scanner and will fabricate custom surgical guides for the precise placement of dental implants.

Dr. Mann also uses a remarkable technology called PRF or Platelet Rich Fibrin. The patient’s own blood is drawn on the day of surgery and placed in a centrifuge to produce the PRF. The advantages are:

  • Helps the bone regenerate where a tooth was extracted.
  • Helps regenerate bone around dental implants.
  • Improves the bone integration around implants.
  • Improves the surgical healing time.

Why would you choose dental implants?
If you are missing one or more teeth, dental implants are a great option for many reasons. They are durable, relatively easy to care for, and comfortably support crowns, bridges, or dentures. They are the best tooth replacements and considered the “standard of care” for tooth loss. They also make it easier to chew and therefore digest your food. Dental implants can improve your confidence and your overall quality of life.

Is sedation available?
You may opt for sedation during your appointment. Mann Family Dental offers oral sedation, which means you take medication the night before and the morning of your appointment. While you’re technically still awake during the appointment, you are completely relaxed and won’t remember the procedure once it’s completed. Visit our sedation page for more information.

Am I a candidate?
After completing a full comprehensive exam and 3D scan, Dr. Mann will review your medical and dental history, the 3D scan, and your needs and desires for dental care. Together, you will determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants. Many times a “ball park” fee can be determined to help you with your decision. The 3D scan helps us determine if you have enough bone to accommodate the implant. If your jawbone doesn’t have enough density, the implant may not be able to withstand the forces of regular chewing and could fail. It’s extremely important to thoroughly review your medical history as some systemic diseases are a contraindication for dental implants. If you are a heavy smoker, the success rate of the implants integrating into the bone goes down. Dr. Mann offers free consultations to discuss the basics of dental implants and the choices that are available.

How do I care for dental implants?
Many people believe that after they have dental implants they’re finished and don’t have to continue professional care or brush and floss. It is absolutely crucial that you brush and floss your implants as though they were your own teeth. Peri-Implantitis or inflammation of the gums and bone around the implant can cause the implant to fail and may result in the loss of your new teeth. At Mann Family Dental we require a commitment on the part of the patient to a lifetime of professional dental care or we don’t treat them. Our goal is to help you maintain your new smile for the rest of your life!

Dental Implants Patient Testimonial

Dental Implant testimonial Image
To start with there is not enough space to write everything that can be said about the level of customer service from Mann Family Dental. The staff, all of them are so kind, caring, understanding and enjoyable to be around. They certainly made me feel at ease.

So Let’s talk teeth!

Finding a dentist. I was so anxious and nervous about looking into new dentures because my previous experience was so bad at “the drive through dentist” my husband would say. I dropped …

Went to my first appointment. After explaining my previous experience in tears, The compassionate Dr Mann, and his delightful and caring staff starting working out a program that would be best for me. I needed a complete set of dentures. Dr Mann suggested I would be a good candidate for implants, sounded kind of scary to me. Dr Mann and the office staff explained the process, the time line, cost and so on. I went home to talk with my husband about it. It was a substantial investment , but we decided that I was worth it!

My visits were scheduled to accommodate my work schedule and with minimal pain and discomfort the process began . Dr Mann is a perfectionist and would say things like; “I’m not happy with that” and “not quite”, “lets adjust this here” Step by step from measuring, fitting, insertion of the implants, healing time and checkups I was perfectly fitted for a great mouthful of teeth. I love them, with the implants in the bottom, teeth stay in place and the top denture fits just where it should. I now have a more confident smile, improved chewing abilities and even my speech is better.

It has been a couple of months since the investment in my new smile with the need for only one adjustment, but if I had any issues I would feel comfortable with calling the office. I have been thinking about getting the implants for the top also..???
And finally to share, during my experience I have learned these 4 things;

All dentists are NOT the same.
Perfection CAN NOT be rushed.
YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!
Do it right the first time, GO TO DR MANN~
