A Patient’s Guide to Sedation Dentistry
Click to watch an informational video.
Mann Family Dental offers safe and effective sedation dentistry.
If you have been avoiding the dentist for years out of fear of extensive dental work, sedation dentistry could be your solution.
What is sedation dentistry?
Sedation Dentistry is a method we use to relax a patient during their dental appointment. There are 3 types of sedation dentistry.
Nitrous Oxide, which is commonly referred to as “laughing gas,” has been described as an ideal method of clinical sedation. The gas is inhaled, giving the patient a euphoric and pain-free feeling. The patient remains conscious while the gas takes the edge off of any pain or discomfort.
Moderate oral sedation is a very comfortable and relaxed state in which most or all of the patient’s dentistry can be completed. A prescription is given the night before, and again just prior to their dental appointment. If needed, additional medication and nitrous oxide can be given during the appointment to maintain a comfortable level of sedation. Although the patient is moderately sedated, they are never asleep and vital signs are closely monitored. Moderated oral sedation will often give the patient partial or complete memory loss of the procedure and is the preferred procedure for patients with high dental fear. Moderate oral sedation is often life changing.
The third method is Intravenous (IV) Sedation. It induces a state of deep relaxation and produces a sleep like state throughout the procedure. Mann Family Dental offers IV sedation in partnership with Blue Sky Solutions Group. This is ideal for patients that have an intense fear or a sensitive gag reflex. With IV Sedation, these patients can get the relief that they need. A mix of tailored medications are administered to the patient through an IV, and puts them in a dream-like state. Within 30-60 minutes of waking after the procedure the patient is safe to go home with another adult. For the rest of the day the patient should rest and drink plenty of fluids as they recover. Our nurse anesthesiologist will follow up with a phone call to make sure you the patient is doing well.
Am I a candidate for sedation dentistry?
- Have you been delaying dental treatment out of fear of the dentist and/or the amount of work you may need?
- Do you try to forget about the pain in your day to day life because you can’t pick up the phone and make an appointment?
- Do you have trouble with gagging or getting numb?
- Do you dread even the thought of multiple dental visits?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you are a candidate for sedation dentistry.
What is the recovery like?
You may be a little groggy after your treatment, so it is best to have a companion to drive you home. But by the next day you should be totally recovered and feeling great with your new and improved smile!

“Dr. Mann and his staff take great care of my teeth! I recently needed a Crown. A new procedure at Mann Family Dental had my Crown finished within a two hour window, same day-in office, no temporary! A great time saver and a great fit. Dr. Mann handed me an ipad to watch it’s creation in a 3D graphic program. Very cool. Dr. Mann stays educated and is continuously looks for the best ways to make dental care less stressful and less painful for his patients, including their cost savings program for those without dental insurance.
