Sedation Dentistry in Manchester, NH

At Mann Family Dental, we offer safe and effective sedation dentistry to all our patients. Many patients have dental anxiety because of past experiences, or in anticipation of pain. If you have been avoiding the dentist for years out of fear of extensive dental work, sedation dentistry could be your solution.

Your Manchester dentist, Dr. Russell Mann, believes that pain-free dentistry should be available for all our patients. Therefore we work hard to make your experience as stress-free and comfortable as possible.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation Dentistry, or sleep dentistry, is a method we use to relax a patient during their dental appointment. There are three types of sedation dentistry:

Nitrous Oxide

Commonly referred to as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide has been described as an ideal method of clinical sedation. The gas is inhaled, giving you a euphoric and pain-free feeling. Nitrous oxide helps alleviate pain and reduces anxiety and stress. You will remain conscious while the gas takes the edge off of any discomfort.

Oral Sedation

Moderate oral sedation is a very comfortable and relaxed state in which we can complete most or all of your dentistry. We will prescribe medication to take the night before, and then again just before your dental appointment. If needed, additional medication and nitrous oxide can be given during your procedure to maintain a comfortable level of sedation.

Although you will be moderately sedated, you are never asleep, and our team will monitor you closely. You won't remember the details of the procedure, and your appointment will seem to fly by. Moderate oral sedation allows patients to complete dental work that they may have put off due to fear and can often be life-changing.

IV Sedation

The third method is intravenous (IV) sedation. This form of dental sedation is ideal for patients fighting severe anxiety and phobia in dental procedures. It induces a state of deep relaxation and produces a sleeplike state throughout the process. An IV sedation is the most effective route to significantly reducing dental anxiety; however, advanced training is required to administer in office.

To help our most anxious of patients, our team has completed over 90 hours of training to provide IV sedation in-office safely. Patient safety is always of utmost importance at Mann Family Dentistry. As a result, for certain cases, sedation is provided in partnership with Blue Sky Solutions Group.

IV sedation is ideal if you have an intense fear or a sensitive gag reflex. With IV sedation, you can get the relief that they need. IV sedation puts you in a much deeper state of relaxation than nitrous oxide or oral sedation. You remain conscious but with little to no memory of the procedure.

A mix of tailored medications is administered through an IV in your vein for the entire procedure. If you are a patient with a fear of needles, rest assured the placement of the IV is quick and often painless. Nitrous Oxide can also be used to reduce your fear of needles while we place the IV. For your safety, we will check your blood pressure before and after sedation. During sedation, we also monitor your pulse and oxygen levels.

How Should I Prepare for IV Sedation?

All patients receiving IV sedation treatment are required to arrive at their scheduled appointment with an adult that can provide transportation home after the procedure. To accurately monitor your condition, we request patients to remain in the office for 30 to 60 minutes after waking. For the rest of the day, you should rest and drink plenty of fluids as you recover.

Our nurse anesthesiologist will follow up with a phone call to make sure you, the patient, are doing well. Before your scheduled visit, Dr. Mann will give you specific instructions to help you prepare for IV sedation. Preparing for your appointment may include discussing any medications you are currently taking and any direction regarding eating and drinking before your appointment.

Please do not hesitate to express any concerns and ask questions before your appointment. Our staff is here to help you enjoy a relaxing and safe dental experience.

What Are the Benefits of Sedation Dentistry?

Have you every delayed going to the dentist because of dental fear and anxiety? If you have an oral issue, it will never suddenly get better. What may start as a small dental issue can grow into a costly procedure. Delaying dental treatments will only make oral problems more complex.

At Mann Family Dental, we appreciate how stressful dental and medical appointments can be. Sedation dentistry is a gentle and relaxing dental treatment that allows you to get the dental care you need without losing sleep over your procedure. By requesting sleep dentistry, you allow our dental team to complete the necessary steps for ensuring your oral health.

Am I a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?

  • Have you been delaying dental treatment out of fear of the dentist and the amount of work you may need?
  • Do you try to forget about the pain in your day to day life because you can’t pick up the phone and make an appointment?
  • Do you have trouble with gagging or getting numb?
  • Are you sensitive in your oral nerves and fear the pain of dental tools?
  • Are you generally nervous or anxious about any procedure?
  • Do you dread even the thought of lengthy dental procedures or multiple dental visits?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you are a candidate for sedation dentistry!

We encourage our patients to ask us about sedation therapy to help them through dental work such as tooth extractions, root canals, dental implants, and more. Any fears regarding dental work can be worked through; we will take the time to help you feel better about your dental procedure.

We want to treat any persistent dental problems or pain without causing further anxiety. As with any medicine, there are always risk factors. To keep our patients safe, Dr. Mann will consider your overall health to ensure there are no complications. We ask that our patients provide our dental team with their medical history and list of medications.

What Is the Recovery Like?

You may be a little groggy after your treatment, so it is best to have a companion to drive you home. But by the next day, you should be completely recovered and feeling great with your new and improved smile!

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there multiple types of sedation dentistry available?

+

Yes!

At Mann Family Dental, we want you to be as relaxed and at-ease as possible during your dental treatment. And if you struggle with severe dental anxiety, we understand that relaxing is easier said than done!

Types of Dental Sedation

To help you feel more comfortable while you’re in our dental chair, we offer three different types of sedation dentistry in Manchester, NH:

  1. Nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas”
  2. Oral sedation in the form of medication
  3. IV sedation

Our dentist can prescribe one sedation individually or use a combination of multiple methods to help you feel your most relaxed. Sometimes, a sedation dentistry treatment that works for one person isn’t ideal for another, which is why we customize your treatment for your unique needs.

The goal of our Manchester, NH sedation dentistry is always to relieve your dental fears and make visits to our dental office less stressful. If your anxieties are minor or have been well-controlled without sedation dentistry in the past, we will probably recommend nitrous oxide for your dental procedures.

If you’re prone to more severe dental-induced stress, however, Dr. Mann may want to use oral sedation or IV sedation to reduce your chances of feeling any sort of anxiety.

Will my dental procedure hurt?

You have no reason to worry - our practice philosophy is centered around patient comfort and care. We will go out of our way to make your visit relaxing and as comfortable as possible.

Our patients often comment that the fear and anticipation of the pain was way worse than the procedure itself.

Don't like shots?

If you don’t like shots, you’re in good hands; Dr. Mann is a master at dental injections, and many patients say it was the most comfortable they’ve ever experienced. Once your mouth is numb, you shouldn’t feel anything, but we’ll continue to check in with you to make sure you are comfortable.

We know that even with gentle, attentive care dentistry is a challenge for many people. For this reason, we provide several stress-reducing sedation options. Nitrous oxide is a gas that’s inhaled through a small nasal mask and will produce a dreamy, euphoric sensation that lasts only for the duration of your treatment.

Do you require more relaxation?

If you would like a deeper level of relaxation, Dr. Mann can prescribe anti-anxiety medication that you take before your appointment to keep you calm and comfortable. For highly anxious patients, we can offer IV sedation that will put you in a deep state of relaxation.
