What Are Dental Implants & How Do They Work?

Dental implants are a type of prosthetic device used to replace missing teeth. They are made up of two main components: a titanium post that is surgically implanted into the jaw bone and an artificial tooth or crown that is attached to the post. The implant acts as a replacement for the root of a missing tooth, providing stability and support for the artificial tooth.

Dental implants are a safe and effective way to replace missing teeth and restore a patient’s smile that may have been damaged due to tooth loss and gum disease. They are designed to last for many years with proper care and maintenance.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are surgically placed into the jawbone to replace missing teeth. They provide a strong foundation for permanent or removable replacement teeth that are made to match your natural teeth. This tooth replacement option will look and feel like your own adjacent teeth, and because they fuse with the bone, they become permanent.

Dental implants can be used to replace one or more missing teeth and can also be used to support a bridge or denture.

How do dental implants work?

Dental implants are made of titanium, which is a biocompatible material that fuses with the jawbone. During the implant procedure, a small hole is drilled into the jawbone, and the implant is inserted. Over time, the bone will grow around the implant and fuse with it, creating a strong foundation for the replacement tooth and acting as your new natural tooth root.

Once the implant is in place, a post is attached to the implant, and a dental crown, dental bridge, or partial denture is placed on top of the post. The crown or bridge looks and functions just like a natural tooth, allowing you to eat, speak and smile with confidence.

Dental implants are an effective and long-lasting solution for tooth loss.

Types of Dental Implants

There are two types of implants available, depending on the patient’s needs and budget. These two implants are subperiosteal or endosteal.

Endosteal

The most common type is an endosteal implant, which is a titanium post that is surgically implanted into the jawbone. This type of implant provides a strong foundation for a single tooth or multiple teeth.

Subperiosteal

Subperiosteal implants are another option, which is placed on top of the jawbone instead of being implanted into it. This type of implant is used for patients who do not have enough jaw bone density to support an endosteal implant.

The Dental Implant Process

The process of placing a dental implant typically begins with a consultation between the patient and their dentist. During this appointment, the dentist will assess the patient’s oral health and gum tissue to determine if they are a good candidate for this oral surgery. If so, the dentist will then take x-rays to plan out where the implant should be placed in the jawbone. This will also let your dentist see if you have experienced any bone loss and will require bone grafting prior to the placement.

Once the site has been determined, the patient will be given a local anesthetic to numb the area. The dentist will then make a small incision in the gums and drill a hole into the jawbone. The titanium post is then inserted into the hole and secured with screws or other materials.

Once the implant has been placed, it will need to heal for several months before the artificial tooth can be attached. During this healing process, the implant will fuse with the surrounding bone and become a stable foundation for the new tooth.

Once the implant has healed, the dentist will attach an abutment to the post. This is a small metal piece that will hold the artificial tooth in place. The artificial tooth is then placed over the abutment and secured with dental cement or screws.

Dental Implant FAQs

Is the implant procedure painful?

No, the dental implant procedure is typically not painful. Your oral surgeon will use local anesthesia to numb the area before the surgery, and you may also be given a sedative to help you relax during the procedure. After the surgical procedure, you may experience some soreness or swelling in the area, but this can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medications.

Will my implant blend in with my natural teeth?

Once the dental procedure is complete, the implants will look and feel just like your real teeth. The crown or bridge that is placed on top of the post will be custom-made to match the shape, size, and color of your existing teeth. This ensures that your new smile looks natural and blends in with your other teeth.

Is this treatment covered by insurance?

The answer to this question depends on your individual insurance plan. Some insurance plans may cover some or all of the cost of dental implants, while others may not cover any of the costs. It is best to contact your insurance provider to find out what coverage you have for dental implants. Additionally, financing options are usually available that can help make the cost of treatment more affordable.

How long do these dental restorations last?

Dental implants are designed to be a long-term solution for missing teeth. With proper care and maintenance, dental implants can last for many years. On average, dental implants can last up to 15 years or more before they need to be replaced. However, this number can vary depending on the individual and their dental care habits.
